At one time, Fortnite was only Save the World, a paid player-versus-environment (PvE) campaign. With the introduction of the free player-versus-player (PvP) Battle Royale mode and its massive success, Save the World took a back seat. That doesn’t mean Save the World is a bad game, however. Quite the contrary. Both game modes share many of the same gameplay traits, but Save the World is story-driven and designed around a solo or cooperative play experience. All PvP combat is reserved for the free Battle Royale game.
In this list you take a closer look at ten keys to understanding Save the World, which is available to PC, Mac, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One owners.
As of this writing and barring any special offers, the Standard Founder’s Pack for Save the World costs $39.99. Although Epic Games has stated that Save the World will become free at some point, they plan to delay availability in that format until they’ve sufficiently expanded the in-game story.
Mandatory tutorial
Save the World is set in a near-future Earth where a worldwide storm, shown in the following figure, has caused 98 percent of the world’s population to disappear, replaced with husks, zombie-like creatures that attack the survivors. You and three other players, either humans or computer-generated teammates, work towards a common goal on various missions.
You need to fight against the storm, rescue survivors, build structures, craft weapons, find loot, and upgrade and expand a shield device to protect your base of operations.
After the opening cut-scenes establish the story and describe the need for a commander, you, you’re immediately tasked with taking down an advancing group of husks, as shown here.
As in Battle Royale, aim for the heads! If you succeed in taking out all of the husks, your next step will be to find a way out of the caves. Head towards the yellow checkpoint symbol, as shown.
After you reach the mine cart, as shown in the following figure, destroy it with your pickaxe. Continue following the rest of the tutorial, using the skills you learned from Battle Royale, including building. You’ll also learn some new skills, like crafting, where you can harvest materials to build weapons. Good luck!
Mission structure based on objectives and quests
After you get past its tutorials, Save the World involves mission-based objectives and quests where you defend locations against enemy husks or seek out stranded survivors. For defense missions, you’ll be harvesting materials to make needed items and setting up and building fortifications. When you’re ready, you’ll need to defend your base.
The map, as shown in the following figure, is randomly generated for each mission, save for the map where your home base is located. You’ll return to your storm shield on your home base’s map to increase the radius of the shield’s influence.
V-Bucks and llamas
Just like in Battle Royale and its related modes, V-Bucks can be spent in Save the World. However, items bought in Save the World do not transfer to Battle Royale and vice-versa.
In Save the World, you can purchase llama pinatas, like those in the following figure, which contain weapon and trap schematics, XP, new heroes, and more.
Heroes
There are four main hero classes in Save the World, which are described as follows:
- Constructor: This is the strongest in building, defending structures, and crowd control. This hero class has 18 standard subclasses, each with unique perks and bonuses.
- Ninja: This is the strongest in melee combat and quick movement. This hero class has 19 standard subclasses, each with unique perks and bonuses.
- Soldier: This is the strongest in ranged combat and the use of guns and grenades. This hero class has 19 standard subclasses, each with unique perks and bonuses.
- Outlander: Shown in Figure 10-10, this is the strongest in resource collection, scouting, and crowd control. This hero class has 19 standard subclasses, each with unique perks and bonuses.
Hero subclasses determine the abilities, hero perks, and squad bonuses received as the character is upgraded and evolved. You can choose hero perks to maximize the effectives of your gameplay style and even stack heroes to increase weapon damage.
Command Center
The Command Center lets you track every aspect of your heroes. Apply XP boosts, check notices and alerts, and review your Power and Account levels through each of your heroes to keep tabs on all of your available options.
Weapons
There are two categories of weapons in Save the World: ranged and melee. Ranged weapons include: assault rifles, explosive weapons, pistols, shotguns, and sniper rifles.
Melee weapons include: axes, clubs, hardware, scythes, spears, and swords.
Like heroes, each weapon has a subclass that determines performance.
Weapon schematics are used to craft a specific weapon. Crafting requires the correct number of materials listed on the schematic, like the example for a common assault rifle shown.
Unlike in Battle Royale, weapons wear out and break over time. After it’s broken, the weapon can be recycled to reclaim a portion of its original crafting materials.
Traps
There are three categories of traps in Save the World: wall traps, floor traps, and ceiling traps. Traps work the same as in Battle Royale, with defensive traps that damage or disrupt enemies, such as the ceiling Electric Field trap shown in the following figure, and utility traps that perform a function like healing.
Just as with weapons, trap schematics are used to craft a specific trap and traps wear out and break over a set number of triggers.
Player statistics
The acronym F.O.R.T. represents the four types of player statistics, each of which can be increased by 1 percent per point:
- (F)ortitude: Health and health regeneration.
- (O)ffense: Ranged and melee weapon damage.
- (R)esistance: Shield and shield generation.
- (T)ech: Trap, ability, and gadget damage, as well as healing.
F.O.R.T. statistics total the bonuses awarded by survivor squads and skills, and are found under the Squads tab. There are two types of survivors in Save the World: lead survivors and survivors. Lead survivors, like the doctor female leader shown, affect a larger percentage of F.O.R.T. statistics and are slotted into the Leader slot for each squad.
Inserting survivors into survivor squads grants F.O.R.T. statistics by squad type:
To save time or eliminate the task from your to do list, use the Autofill Survivors option to automatically manage your survivors and squads.
- (F)ortitude: EMT Squad and Training Team.
- (O)ffense: Fire Team Alpha and Close Assault Squad.
- (R)esistance: Scouting Party and Gadgeteers.
- (T)ech: Corps of Engineering and The Think Tank.
Your Power, which is the number in the upper-left corner next to the lightning bolt, as shown, is a summary of your F.O.R.T. statistics mixed with the boosts from your survivor squads. The higher the number, the more potent your hero and abilities.
Unlike your Account level, which only goes up, your Power level can be both boosted or reduced depending upon your actions at any one time, including mission type, party make-up, and active perks.
Upgrade points
All rewards are associated with your account level. Upgrade points are awarded based on your current account level. These points can be spent to unlock improved pickaxes, building health, gadgets, storage capacity, and other improvements in the Upgrades page.
Monsters
As you progress through Save the World, you’ll not only encounter husks, but other monster types. Let’s take a look at some of these monsters:
Fortnite Save The World You Have Open Gadget Slots Free
- Elemental monsters: High-level enemies that include the following:
- Fire monster: Weak against water weapons and does double damage to wood structures.
- Nature monster: Weak against fire weapons and does double damage to metal structures.
- Water monster: Weak against nature weapons and does double damage to stone structures.
- Husk: Most common monsters that attack on sight. There are a variety of husk types with different appearances and attacks.
- Mimics: Conceal themselves as treasure chests and do bite damage.
- Mist monsters: The second most-common monster type that attacks on sight. These large monsters create openings for smaller husks to attack. The following figure shows a flinger mist monster, which throws husks towards your base.
- Trolls: Can pass through walls and steal materials.

Save the World is the premium, co-op sandbox PVE Campaign of Fortnite.
Save the World and Fortnite were synonymous at one time—buying Fortnite meant buying Save the World. However, with the release of the PvP mode Battle Royale, Epic Games and most players started referring to Fortnite as the collection of two different games: Save the World is the paid PvE Campaign, and Battle Royale is the free-to-play PvP game mode. Save The World was initially expected to be released as free-to-play in late 2018, however this was pushed back in October 2018 to an unspecified date.[1] On June 29, 2020, Epic Games announced that Save the World would be leaving Early Access, however it would not be going free-to-play as originally planned.[2]

Story[edit edit source]
“ | If you're out there, we need your help! The storm came, and the monsters followed. They took everything: our towns, even our families. The few of us left are in serious danger... Now it's the time to fight back! All we need is a leader. And that's you. Sure it'll be dangerous. I mean, yeah, there's monsters (a lot of monsters!) but we've got massive forts, killer traps, and piles of loot. If we stick together, they don't stand a chance. This is our world, and it's time to take it back! - Ray(Starting Cutscene/Introduction Trailer to Save the World.) | „ |
One day, 98% of Earth's human population suddenly disappeared, and the remaining humans found the skies covered in dense clouds, creating chaotic storms that dropped husks: humanoid zombie-like creatures that attacked the living. The survivors found ways to construct 'storm shields', a field that cleared the storm clouds from immediately overhead and reduced the attacks from husks, and used these to set up survivor bases across the globe. The player is a commander of one of these bases, charged with going out of the storm shield to find resources, survivors, and other allies to help expand their storm shield and find a way to return Earth to its normal state.
How to Play[edit edit source]
In Save the World, the player takes on the role of one of the numerous Heroes, with the task of fighting against The Storm, rescuing Survivors, building structures, and upgrading and expanding a Shield Device to protect the area. Though your tasks are straightforward, Save the World offers multiple levels of progression for players to utilize in order to better reach their goal.
Heroes[edit edit source]
There are currently four main Hero Classes in Save the World:
- The Soldier, with a focus on ranged combat and the all-around use of Guns and Grenades.
- The Constructor, with a focus on building, defending structures, and crowd control for heavy situations.
- The Ninja, with a focus on melee combat and fast movement.
- The Outlander, with a focus on resource collection, scouting, and distraction/crowd control.
In addition to the Main Classes, each Class has a number of Subclasses, which dictate the Abilities, Hero Perks and Squad Bonuses that a Hero will receive as it is Upgraded and Evolved. Heroes come in the form of Cards that can be acquired from Loot Llamas, or from Rewards.
Players have the possibility of taking up to 6 Heroes into battle:
- The Commander is the Hero that the player controls.
- The Support Team allows 5 additional heroes to be selected for bonuses based on each hero.
- Each Hero has a unique perk. Commander Heroes grant an evolved perk, marked with a “+”.
Weapons[edit edit source]
There are two categories of Weapons in Save the World:
- Ranged Weapons, which include Assault Rifles, Shotguns, Pistols, Sniper Rifles, and Explosive Weapons.
- Melee Weapons, which include Swords, Axes, Spears, Scythes, Clubs, and Hardware.
Much like Heroes, each Weapon also has a Subclass which will further dictate how the weapon performs.
Weapons are acquired and used in two steps:
- Weapon Schematics are acquired through Llama Pinatas and Rewards. These can be Upgraded and Evolved.
- Unlike Heroes, which feature fixed Perks and Bonuses, the Perks and Bonuses on Weapon Schematics are random. Later on in the game, the player has the choice to Upgrade and Strengthen the weapon's Perks and Bonuses.
- The player must own a Weapon Schematic to be able to craft the Weapon they wish to use.
- Possessing the appropriate Materials to be able to craft a specific Weapon from a Weapon Schematic.
Weapons that have already been crafted can also be acquired by looting Treasure Chests, Storm Chests, or as loot drops from killing various enemies. These Weapons and their subsequent Perks will always be random.
Weapons wear out and break over time, and as such their use will be limited by their inherent durability. Weapons can be used until they break, or recycled in order to reclaim some of the crafting materials which were used up in its creation.
Building[edit edit source]
Building is a core mechanic of Save the World and functions in the same manner as building in Battle Royale.
Knowing how, when, and where to build structures is vital for completing missions and Storm Shield Defence. You can edit structures. Structures can be upgraded and repaired using materials.
Traps[edit edit source]
Traps come in two types: Defensive, which do damage to enemies, and Utility, which perform a function such as Healing.
Traps and Trap Schematics interact in exactly the same way as the Weapons and Weapon Schematics listed above.
F.O.R.T. Stats[edit edit source]
F.O.R.T. is an acronym for the four types of statistics available to players to boost their strength in the following categories:
- Fortitude, health, and health regeneration.
- Offense, ranged, and melee weapon damage.
- Resistance, shield, and shield regeneration.
- Tech, Trap, Ability, and Gadget damage, as well as healing.
F.O.R.T. Stats is the sum of the bonuses awarded by Survivor Squads and Skills and can be viewed in the Squads tab.
Survivor Squads[edit edit source]
Note: In Patch 6.30 with the Front-End Improvements update, The Survivor Squads have been moved to the new Survivor Tab. However, it works just like before.
There are currently two types of Survivors in Save the World:
Much like Heroes, Survivors come in the form of cards that can be Upgraded and Evolved. They come with a myriad of bonuses.
Survivors are slotted into Survivor Squads, which unlock over time as missions in the story are completed. The accumulated stats of the Survivors slotted into the Survivor Squads affect the F.O.R.T. Stats (bonuses to Hero Strengths) and the player's Power Level (which missions they are allowed to access). Only Lead Survivors, who determine proportionally a larger percentage of F.O.R.T. Stats, can be slotted into the Leader slot for each squad. Survivors can be acquired through Loot Llamas and Rewards.
Skills[edit edit source]
Note: In Patch 6.30 The Skill Trees were removed due to the new Front-End Improvements Update. All players that got rewards from the Skill And Research Trees were given some free rewards. The Research Tab is still in-game, but the Skill tree is now the Upgrade Tab. Additionally Leveling up still rewards skill points, but not every time. instead, it gives random rewards and after a couple of Levels gives Skill points.
There are currently two Skill Trees which offer point-based progression in Save the World:
- The Skill Tree, which can be used by leveling up, and from Rewards.
- The Research Tree, which can be used with Research Points that are generated over time.
Nodes not only offer direct bonuses to F.O.R.T. stats, but unlock things such as Gadgets, higher-grade Evolutions, Survivor Squad slots, and Pickaxe Upgrades.
Missions, Quests, and Events[edit edit source]
Missions, Quests, and Events are where the player actually uses their Hero to Save the World.
- Whenever a player enters the game world, they are always tasked with a Mission, such as rescuing survivors or building a bomb. The victory condition for each Mission must be met in order for the Mission to be considered Completed.
- A Quest describes an additional task or set of tasks that must be completed in order to progress the Quest path. Quests might task a player with killing a certain amount of husks, the collection of certain Quest Items, or completing multiple Missions of a certain type. Every Quest provides Rewards upon completion.
- Events describe limited-time Quest paths or Missions that offer unique rewards, such as Event Heroes or Event Weapons. Often times Events will reward players with event tickets that can be used to purchase special Event Llamas in an Event Store.
There are three ways to jump into the action:
- Selecting 'Play Now' on the Play tab places the player into a Mission queue that will satisfy the current requirement for Save the World's Main Quest path.
- Completing the Main Quest path is the only way to reach higher-level requirements Map locations.
- Selecting 'View Event' while on the Play tab brings up the player's current Event Quest progression. Selecting 'Play Now' on this Event Quest screen places the player into a mission queue that will provide the player an opportunity to meet some or all of the current requirements for the current Event Quest path.
- Players can navigate to a specific Map Location and see which Missions are available. Players can use this screen to choose a Mission based on its type or what rewards it offers.
Monsters[edit edit source]
Players encounter a variety of monsters as they progress through Save the World.
- Husks and Mist Monsters attack on sight with a variety of attacks and behaviors.
- Mimics conceal themselves as Treasure Chests, springing themselves on the unwary Hero.
- Trolls are notable for their treasure stashes and for hoarding BluGlo.
At higher levels, players will encounter elemental monsters:
- Fire monsters are weak to Water weapons and do double damage to wood structures.
- Nature monsters are weak to Fire weapons and do double damage to metal structures.
- Water monsters are weak to Nature weapons and do double damage to stone structures.
