Needles, a city in the scorching Mojave Desert, sits along the Colorado River, so it is something of an oasis in the midst of cactus and sand. If you follow Route 66, the first thing you see upon entering California are the palm trees of Needles. It is also a leaving off point if you want to go to Arizona or Nevada from California, as both states are just minutes away. With several campgrounds in town, you can easily make Needles a starting point for exploration of the river and desert.
RV Campgrounds
Needles has more RV camping than any other kind. At Desert View RV Resort (desertviewrv.com), there are hedges and trees between every site. Amenities include games, full hookups and laundry. Go to nearby Lake Havasu or Lake Mohave for swimming and boating. Just north of Needles is Spirit Mountain RV Park (smrv.com). Adventure
Pirate Cove Resort & Marina (piratecoveresort.com) on Moabi Road is Needles' only adventure camping resort. You can choose from waterfront sites, RV sites and cabin rentals here with all of the standard amenities, including dump stations, showers and full hookups. You can watch the Colorado River roll by, have a campfire on the sandy beaches, hike the park's trails and avail yourself of any or all of four zip line activities on-site. The campground has a seven-lane ramp for boaters, making waiting in line to launch unnecessary. Anyone 16 years of age or older will need a fishing license, for which the state charges both annual and short-term fees.
Waterfront
While most of Needles' campgrounds are on or near the water, some focus on that aspect. Needles Marina Park (needlesmarinapark.com) is a campground with tent, cabin and RV sites. It also has a mobile home park for residents, so there is an established community. Amenities include showers, ice, general store, laundry, full hookups and swimming pool. Bring a sweater along because Mitchell Caverns, the best local place to cool off, is nearby and always 65 degrees. Take a tour with a ranger who will be familiar with the caves.
Rainbo Beach Resort (rainbobeachresort.com) is an RV resort with an emphasis on boating and watersports. You can go water-skiing and fishing on the Colorado River or swimming in the campground's heated pool. Other amenities include ATV trails, laundry, showers, boat launch and gym equipment. For what Fodor's calls 'one of the best kept secrets in Needles,' go to Fender's River Road Resort & Motel (no website; 3396 Needles Highway, Needles; 760-326-3423). With just 27 campsites and 10 rooms, it provides luxurious peace and quiet. Amenities, however, are basic.
Family
With amenities like a snack bar, widescreen TV in the lodge and a swimming pool, the Needles KOA Campground (koa.com) is for families. Needles KOA is also a good place for family reunions because the campground provides catering, space for large gatherings and event planning. Nearby attractions that are appropriate for families include the Needles Municipal Aquatic Center; the ghost town of Oatman, 25 miles northeast of Needles; the Mojave National Preserve (nps.gov); and the Mystic Maze, which is 12 miles south.
